Venom War The Most Skippable Marvel Event In Years!

  • Marvel Comics are gearing up Venom War now that Blood Hunt is almost complete. Venom #35 is a prelude to the event to get readers caught up and ready to see Eddie and Dylan Brock go to war. Unfortunately. Venom #35 serves as nothing more than a warning for fans to skip the event. Featuring some of the worst writing in Al Ewing's career. The character progression for Dylan Brock is especially egregious, as Ewing just turns him into Cable. Wes and Dok review Venom #35 and are dumbfounded at the lack of story progression over 3 years. Marvel Comics wants everyone to skip Venom War.

totally agree. i'm kind of ashamed that I stuck it out and have been buying every single issue. This entire run is shit. Venom is the character that I generally buy all his titles, but I am so frustrated with this run and the sheer amount of titles Venom has right now, it's insane. i hope they don't make a new Venom comic for like 2 full years at least. Venomverse reborn is just the stupidest one i think right now we just had a venomverse last year which amounted to nothing and we had one like 5 years ago as well.

This run is so confusing and 30 odd issues event 1 month after an event which itself was 60 issues. It's insane. And don't forget at the start of the year we had gang war which itself was 30 odd issues.

I’ve no idea why people are still reading this stuff, manga exists guys, please please start reading it. Pick up Berserk, Made in Abyss, Gantz, Pluto, Claymore, Akame ga Kill, Witch & the Beast, Call of the Night.
Start with those, there’s a mix of fantasy, Sci-fi, action, magic, action romcom to get you started.

I’ve said for a while that al Ewing is good at making up ideas but not good at executing them. He uses a lot of lore which is always good but that’s it really. His immortals hulk was good but the last 20 or so issues just dragged on and the ending was very underwhelming. He is defenders had great ideas but it just felt like all plot and no story. His immortal Thor is okay but it’s very vague in its ideas.

The Klyntar were declared extinct back in the "Planet of the Symbiotes" storyline from the 90's. Then again, they weren't officially named until Flash Thompson got the symbiotes. Can anyone else hear a dead symbiote horse being whipped?

This is the worst volume of Venom. Dylan Brock sucks and was the only bad idea of Donny Cates’ run. All they had to do was follow the tone of Donny Cates’ horror run instead of this multiversal, time traveling, meta gibberish.

Even though I sold a great deal of Venom and the eventual King In Black, my opinion is its time to put Venom back in the bottle before all this over exposure finally blows up in every retailers face. Bring it back to its core...Brock/Venom on Earth as the villain or Lethal Protector. It's go to happen at some point. Now hoping he'd become a Spider-Man villain again is probably asking too much. But I've seen where this all leads....sales crashes do to over exposure. WTF20.

When Ewing took over Venom I enjoyed the first 10 or so issues, but it's been downhill from there and I'm really not interested anymore. Venom War is a hard pass for me.
About what you said about Ewing though, he got popular because of Immortal Hulk, which was a huge hit. He hasn't written anything as popular since then, but that accomplishment is still noteworthy

I usually skip anything with Venom. Marvel has been beating this character to death since they made him a “lethal protector”. The character should have been forgotten before that happened. I have been saying for years that Marvel has been pushing Venom so to say please come back Todd MacFarlane? Please?! He is not a great of a talent at all.

I'm actually really looking forward to this. It's great character progression for all the symbiotes and the venomverse. People are saying they want venom to go back to a street level villain but I already have all those issues and stories and looking forward to expanding this side of the marvel universe. Same reason I'm buying all of the Spawn issues and really like the progression of that universe as well, and the start of the Ghost Machine universe is something fresh and exciting and looks absolutely beautiful every comic.
That being said it is getting a bit harder to follow as they introduce all these new symbiote characters and threaded storylines. For me there will eventually have to be an ending in sight for the entire venom line, and since it's Marvel's IP they never will, so I'll have to wrap it up somewhere along the line myself. It could happen if they raise the price to $4.99 after venom war cuz I'm holding the line at $3.99, especially if the quality in the art drops off. It's why I'm only collecting Hulk and Venom now from Marvel.

I've never been a Venom fan or reader. So whatever Donny Cates did before this is completely lost on me. And I always feel lost opening a Venom book over the last few months. I wish it was a bit more Entry Level? I'd rather find out little things through expository dialog than an infodump page any day. Did anyone pick up on the Kurt Vonnegut, Jr "Slaughterhouse-Five" reference that opened this issue up? Was it good or hammy? YOU BE THE JUDGE!!!

It wasn't too long ago. I finished the vemon omnibus by cates, and I do think it was a good run. But I'm so glad I didn't continue with its continuity. To see how worse it gets just helps me not to spend any money on it.
I liked the way they setup sleeper in the cates run, where they have it acting like a nova corp/guardian of the galaxy type of character. Then to regulate it to a "minor side character" that's basically a dumb space cat. I totally would love a solo run of sleeper going around the galaxy helping planets and stopping cosmic threats.

Flexo, the creature that looks like a suit of armor, is an invention from WW2 era 40s that scientists invented from a symbiote they discovered and thought it was a new type of rubber. Dr. Doom went back in time and... ok so the problem with this book and story is it involves time travel and clones(in this case multiple versions of same character). Time travel and clone stories are hard to do right. They are also overdone right now (see Xmen for exaample). Eddie is a city level character. Yes he can involve himself in more(it's an alien symbiote after all) but at the core the Eddie character is street level. This story is cosmic, time travel and multiverses. I disagree entirely that these decade old characters can't have kids. It was even said that you can't keep doing the same thing over and over. Spider-man having kids, Batman, Superman. I actually liked Skarr from Hulk until they started to misuse the character. That is the key. They messed up Dylan Brock. He went from a preteen to a guy working in a warehouse. Yes Eddie has a kid now and that means additional responsibilities and a side character he worries about and can be targeted for dangerous situations. But that doesn't mean he has to fly into space and then meet his future time line version and create alternate timelines and his son needs to be aged up and become the new Venom. These characters are 40+ years old. It's ok if Peter isn't jobless and a swinging bachelor, it's ok if Batman marries Catwoman, Clark marries Lois, and if Eddie Brock is also a single dad. The non villain anti hero Venom is a man with an alien symbiote who is dealing with the wrongs of his past by trying to do good. The kid he didn't know he had changes none of that. Like I said they just didn't need to age the kid up and give him a symbiote. That felt rushed.

I've tried different series with Al Ewing and every damn time! He starts with an ok to good story. He tells the whole story in 4 or 5 issues. Then he spends the rest of the series jumping timelines and meandering around with a story that makes no sense and says nothing until it's over. Its everything he's ever written that I've read for sure and apparently this too

Venom (Eddie Brock) is a perfect example of what happens when a comic book super-villain character becomes way too popular way too easily and way too quickly, and then the character gets turned from a professional criminal to a costumed, super-powered vigilante, ruining the character to the point where they had to create Carnage in order to try to recapture what had made Venom great in the first place. It never fails. They did it with other Marvel Comics comic book characters, too. Even DC Comics did it. I fucking hate that shit. It's just as bad as when they nerf characters on purpose in movies because their powers are just too overpowered. Man that shit pisses me off to no end. 😤
